Reviews

There are so many incredible books available at the moment that it is impossible to read them all, no matter how hard I try! Here are my thoughts about some of the books I have read and how I think they could be used in school as well as Q and A sessions with authors and illustrators.

A Poem for Every Day of Christmas

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,

and never brought to mind?

Should auld acquaintance be forgot

and auld lang syne!

What other poem would be as perfect for today’s entry in a book of poems for this time of year? And, indeed, the poem selected by Allie Esiri for the 31st December is ‘Auld Lang Syne’.

Offering a collection of thirty-one poems, one for each day of December, ‘A Poem for Every Day of Christmas’ combines well-known carols and verses with some lesser-known poems. As the days pass, the choices reflect the anticipation and growing excitement of the season, mixing humour and poignancy, some dwelling on the religious significance of Christmas and some on the secular.

As perfect for sharing as for reading alone, the book offers an advent calendar of poems to be enjoyed- but be warned! Once started, it is very hard to resist flicking through the pages and delighting in each new offering. The eloquence of Christina Rossetti’s ‘In the Deep Midwinter’ one day contrasts beautifully with the joy of ‘Needles’, a wonderful shape poem by Brian Bilston; the traditional cumulative fun of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ is followed by the humour of ‘On the Thirteen Day’, again by Brian Bilston. Teachers might enjoy sharing these, perhaps playing some of the traditional carols included, with their classes or in an assembly as much as families and friends will be entertained by them at home!

Although several of these poems also appear in ‘A Poem for Every Winter’s Day’ also edited by Allie Esiri, there is no doubting that this is a festive collection which can be enjoyed every year.

Santa’s First Christmas

Usually, after working hard all year making toys and then delivering these on Christmas Eve, Santa celebrates the big day with an extra half an hour’s lie in. However, when a passing polar bear points out that this is not much of a celebration, the elves are determined to give Santa a proper Christmas!

The title, ‘Santa’s First Christmas’, refers not to the first time he sets off to deliver presents, but to his first actual celebration of Christmas Day- and the book is a joy from start to finish! Having surprised Santa with breakfast in bed, the elves then take him to choose a tree, decorate it, hang stockings and create a Christmas feast. They are even visited by someone ‘with a beard, dressed in red, with a sack full of gifts’!

The story is perfect for discussing the really important (non-religious) things about the festive season. Sharing, being kind to others, noticing when someone needs a bit of TLC, building traditions, being together… as the elves at last realise that Santa himself could do with a day enjoying himself, they are determined to make it the best day they can and they do this, not by offering the most expensive gifts, but through time and companionship- even when they send him away for dipping his finger in the icing!

The level of humour is just right for both adults and children to enjoy with just the right amount of text to complement the fabulous illustrations. With glowing lights, falling snow and warm firelight, the pictures capture the spirit of an idyllic Christmas. A must read for this Christmas- and all those still to come!

Elves On Strike

Trouble is brewing in Santa’s workshop as the exhausted elves decide that they have had enough. The gift wrappers are stressed and fed up with tricky-to-wrap presents whilst grumpy reindeer are proving hard to train for elves who coach them. They all walk out…all except one little elf who is in the workshop when a heart-felt message arrives. The elf take this to Santa who calls a meeting of the elves and with some team work and a sprinkling of Christmas cheer, everything is soon back on track!

With its bright, colourful illustrations, plenty of flaps to lift and bouncy, rhyming text, ‘Elves on Strike’ is a real seasonal treat! Children will love exploring the chaotic clutter of the workshop and will find different details to giggle over each time the story is shared.

Amid the frenzied preparations and stressful expectations of the ‘perfect’ Christmas it is easy to forget what Christmas is all about- love, hope, sharing and kindness. Many adults will empathise with the overworked elves and sharing the story might lead to some teamwork in the build up to the ‘big’ day! At the very least, it will provide a fun-filled break and some laughter!

Older children might be inspired to create a lift-the- flap scene or card for younger siblings or friends and the pictures offer many opportunities for imaginative story-telling. Each elf is bursting with personality and could easily be the star of their own tale!

The flaps will need careful handling so the book is not spoilt, but this is one which can appear year after year and become a firm festive favourite!

Santa’s Journey/ Twelve Days of Kindness

This simple rhyming story follows Father Christmas as he makes his way across the skies to deliver his gifts on Christmas Eve. Each verse is accompanied by a lovely layered pop-up scene to enjoy and discuss.

The thick card pages are durable and offer protection to the more fragile scenes which pop-up from the page as the book is opened, giving depth to each picture and each of the five scenes is richly coloured.

Perfect for sharing and enjoying as a family, older children may well be tempted to have a go at creating their own pop-up scene or a card inspired by these pictures. Sure to become a festive favourite!

Brightly coloured illustrations show a family spreading festive cheer as they perform twelve simple acts of kindness in the days before Christmas. Each spread has a simple sentence stating what they did on that day, with the picture setting the scene. It clearly shows how little things we can do for others can mean so much - and without the need for spending lots of money. This is all about spending time with others, helping out, being together and showing appreciation for the things which others do for us. Even the cat gets a treat!

A lovely treat to curl up and share!

The Christmas Tree Mouse

The Christmas Tree Mouse is on a mission- to help Santa on his busiest night of the year. And when she notices that baby Ola has been left the wrong present, the Christmas Tree Mouse swings into action, using all her special equipment to get the job done, no matter what cat-astrophe might arise!

Perfect for the festive season, ‘The Christmas Tree Mouse’ is the very thing for snuggling down and sharing in the run up to Christmas. Taking inspiration from the mouse mentioned in the poem by Clement Clarke Moore, Joseph Coelho has created a story explaining the important role of the Christmas Tree Mouse and how she is rewarded in the end!

The Christmas Tree Mouse is an endearing, charming character who takes their duties very seriously. There are many little details to chuckle over and enjoy - I love the idea that Santa squeezes through the letter box! The illustrations are gorgeous with plenty to notice, including the wonderful range of expressions on the Christmas Tree Mouse’s face as she goes about her work, faces and overcomes the danger posed by the household cat! The use of warm Christmas lights against the velvety dark of the night creates a really Christmassy atmosphere, adding to the enjoyment of this cosy tale.

Alongside the milk, mince pies and carrots, families are sure to start leaving a lump of cheese for the Christmas Tree Mouse!

Juniper’s Christmas

When Juniper’s mum goes missing, she seeks help from Niko, who lives in her local London park surrounded by Christmas trees and reindeer that can fly. She suspects he is actually Santa and when she accidentally gets exposed to North Pole magic, Juniper finds that Skara, a young reindeer, has imprinted on her, forming a close bond between the two. With the park threatened by local councillor, Dafydd Carnegie and a Santa who has given up on Christmas, can Juniper find her mum and bring back the magic of the festive season?

There is so much to love in this story that no synopsis of it could possibly do it justice! My son (and I!) loved the ‘Artemis Fowl’ series, thoroughly enjoying the quirky originality and humour of the books and Eoin Colfer has managed to sprinkle the same magic on this book.

A book with a grieving, disaffected Father Christmas who has stopped fulfilling his duties and a mother and daughter bereft at the loss of their husband/ father doesn’t really sound like much of a festive treat yet not everyone is happy at Christmas - a time when the world assumes everyone is. Juniper’s much-loved father loved celebrating Christmas and Juniper herself is a Christmas baby, making the season all the more poignant now that he is no longer there. The story also includes Duchess, one of the homeless people who shelter in the park and who Niko has been offering help and support to and who are now under threat from the machinations of Carnegie and his criminal ally, Trude Madden, who are quite happy to destroy donations for homeless people.

However, the story is peppered with humour, hope and happiness, reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas, offering plenty to discuss and plenty to enjoy. ‘Be the change’, empathise with and care for others, the importance of family (real and ‘adopted’) all ring clear through the inventive, magical technicalities of the workings of Christmas. ‘Juniper’s Christmas’ would make an excellent class story - sure to inspire lots of writing and creative ideas- with many drama opportunities and much to talk about. The book would also make an excellent film..!

The Secret of Helmersbruk Manor: A Christmas Mystery

Flora and her mother are spending the Christmas holidays in a cottage found in the grounds of a decaying mansion in he seaside town of Helmersbruk. It’s their first Christmas without Flora’s father and things are strange and difficult for them so her mother thought the break would do them good. However, Helmersbruk is dark and rainy and when they arrive at the Gatekeeper’s Cottage, the gate seems locked and no one is around apart from Fridolf, who lives next door in the Washhouse. But as Flora explores the Manor grounds, her imagination runs wild and she comes to love it there. Strange whispers, mysterious porcelain figures and the occasional appearance of a boy called Egon increase her fascination with the place and she starts to uncover a fascinating mystery which links the past and the present.

The story is told in twenty-four chapters, making it perfect for reading as an advent book in the countdown to Christmas Day- but I challenge anyone to be able to read it like this! The story is so compelling and absorbing that it is impossible to put down! Carefully placed clues, engaging characters and evocative writing make this a fabulous read- one which is sure to be enjoyed again and again despite the mystery having been solved!

Each chapter beings with a black and white illustration, adding to the atmosphere of the story. Flora is drawn to the Mansion and there are shivery moments, carefully placed to intrigue and pique the reader’s interest and imagination as the Manor’s secrets are revealed. Flora is reeling from the loss of her father, struggling with the rejection of her once-best-friend, Johanna, and the bullying of the horsey girls at school and Helmersbruk Manor offers her peace and a feeling of belonging. She learns to trust again, finding friendship as she strives to save the Manor from a threatened re-development as a hotel complex.

An excellent story, ‘The Secret of Helmersbruk Manor’ is a brilliant, gripping story- perfect for Christmas, but a great read at any time of year!

Stepfather Christmas

Harper, Will and mum have always managed on their own, with mum going as ‘full-on for Christmas as her budget will allow’. So when mum announces that this year her boyfriend, Nick, will be joining them, it’s a bit of a shock. He seems nice, but Harper can’t help noticing that Christmassy things happen whenever he’s around. Convinced he’s actually Father Christmas, she is determined to uncover the truth…

Subtitled ‘A Festive Countdown in 25 Chapters’, ‘Stepfather Christmas’ is a wonderfully charming and humorous festive treat, perfect for sharing a chapter a night in the run up to Christmas Day. The idea of a family read each day of Advent is a joy - when my son was little, we used to read a festive picture book each day- and a lovely way to bring everyone together. The chapters are the perfect length and the characters are wonderfully engaging.

Jovial and kindly, Nick works with the reindeer at the petting zoo, makes the perfect hot chocolate and seems to receive an awful lot of post. As the clues mount up. Harper becomes increasingly suspicious that he is indeed Father Christmas in spite of Will’s scepticism when she tries to discuss it with him. Her doubts and anxieties about Nick becoming part of their tight-knit little family will resonate with many children in a similar situation whilst the mystery about his identity brings plenty of festive fun!

Whether read day-by-day or consumed in one sitting, ‘Stepfather Christmas’ is a delightful, thoroughly engaging read!

Luna Loves Christmas

Luna loves Christmas. Sometimes she spends it at her dad’s, sometimes at her mum’s, but this year, things are going to be different. This year, they are volunteering to make sure that everyone has a happy Christmas. On Christmas Eve, she helps mum to make deliveries before spending the night with her dad. On Christmas Day, she and Dad arrive at the Town Hall to share dinner with the rest of the family - and anyone who wants to come.

This is a fabulously festive story for so many reasons! As readers have discovered in the previous ‘Luna Loves…’ books, Luna is at the heart of a very loving family. Her parents might not be together, but they work hard to ensure their little girl is happy and secure. She is used to having two Christmases- one with each parent; however, having carefully explained the structure of events so that Luna knows exactly what to expect, this Christmas is going to be focused on sharing with others. As Luna and her mother make the deliveries, Luna gains something from each visit as others share things with them- not expensive gifts, but time and fun- a snowball fight, carol singing, a shared Christmas story (which features as a book within the book!).

Once at her father’s, the two make Christmas biscuits and enjoy the bedtime rituals of Christmas Eve. Christmas Day dawns with presents- ‘some for now, some for later’- but little attention is paid to this. Getting ready for the Christmas dinner with everyone else it is the cookies they baked and the home-made presents which are important. The illustrations convey so much warmth and joy between this little family and between members of the community as they come together. The story really shows Luna having a wonderful Christmas, full of fun and family traditions, but also one of sharing, kindness and inclusion. It is a complete joy and a brilliant addition to this delightful series.

The Christmas Songbook

‘The Christmas Songbook’ is a lovely way of introducing children to some traditional festive favourites. A simple rhyming story about a family of mice preparing for Christmas sets the scene for each song and the lovely illustrations offer plenty to discuss and enjoy.

On each page is a star which, when pressed, plays a jaunty rendition of the opening lines of the carol. A simplified score for each song with the words are included, encouraging young musicians to play and sing along. Children are sure to quickly identify their favourites and perhaps learn some which are new to them!

At the end of the book, there are notes about the history of each song which is a really thoughtful addition, giving an extra insight into the development and origin of the song selection. The book is pleasingly sturdy and only a gentle touch on the stars is needed to play the tune, making them perfect for little fingers.

Perfect for the festive season!

20 Elves at Bedtime

The night before Christmas Eve,

Santa could not sleep.

Although his reindeer friends suggest he counts sheep to help him doze off, Santa decides to count gold-buttoned elves instead! And so he does…jingling ones, ribboned ones, busy ones… twenty fun-filled elves until they all fall asleep!

Full of delightful illustrations, ‘Twenty Elves at Bedtime’ is the perfect festive treat! Told in rhyme, the story offers plenty of counting practice as, not only does the story encourage counting from one to twenty, but the cover and end papers also show arrays of twenty elves, crying out to be counted! The pictures are full of humour and as each elf is shown with their name and particular talent at the beginning of the book, there is plenty of opportunity for finding each one as the story progresses and for encouraging children to develop their own stories about their favourites. There is plenty of vocabulary to explore and enjoy along the way and one elf is admiring the Northern Lights which is sure to inspire discussions! Teachers might offer children the opportunity to write their own elvish tales, using one of the elves from the book to develop their own ideas- perhaps creating elf shaped books!

The story also lends itself to being part of a bedtime routine- particularly in the build up to Christmas. As the elves begin to tire, the text begins to slow and the pictures show everyone settling down to sleep, ready for the activity of Christmas Eve.

A magical Christmas treat!

The BIG Christmas Bake

In this delightful book, the traditional song ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ is given a tasty twist as once Christmas Day is over, the children bake up a delicious treat. One the first day of Christmas, a partridge brings dried fruit, followed by two speckled doves with flour on the second. As each day passes, more and more creatures arrive bearing ingredients for the Twelfth Night Cake until the dried bean is added on day ten- whoever finds this will be crowned the Twelfth Night King. Additional information and a recipe are included at the end of the story, along with the words from the original song.

Told in deliciously bouncy rhyme, this is a perfect story for reading aloud. The illustrations are full of humour and wonderful detail, offering new details to notice with each reading. The ingredient bearing animals are bursting with quirky personality- I love the dancing hippos and the leaping frogs!

There is so much to love about this book- plenty to discuss and laugh about as well as the fun of making Christmas cupcakes should you wish! Baking and books- the perfect combination.

The Christmas Department Store

It’s Christmas Eve, but Benji doesn’t feel very festive. This year, his family can’t afford a tree or Christmas dinner and Benji wishes he could buy his family some spectacular presents to make them happy. When he is bowled over by a gigantic polar bear, Benji suddenly notices a magical department store where he is able to ‘buy’ the most wonderful gifts for his family in exchange for a silly song and an exceptional story. Benji leaves the department store feeling full of Christmas spirit, but on Christmas morning, he worries that the twisted trumpet for his sister, the imaginary hat for his grandmother and a jar full of the smell of feeling loved for his dad are terrible. But everyone’s smiles and joy soon reassure him that these are the perfect gifts to make his family feel loved.

At this time of year, we are bombarded with images of the ‘perfect’ Christmas with extensive decorations, endless supplies of food and lavish gifts. However, the reality is that many cannot afford this version of Christmas, leaving some children feeling anxious and sad that they are missing out. Christmas (and any other festival/ time of year) should be about the simple, but true things- being with those you love, sharing whatever you have, taking time to enjoy life- and this lovely picture book is a real reminder of this, sharing with the reader that you do not need lots of money or ‘things’ to have a wonderful Christmas.

The book offers the perfect starting point for creating home made gifts- things which are tailor made for those we love. The idea of the jars of smells is a beautiful one and although not possible to reproduce, could inspire a jar of things for someone- perhaps things found on a walk together, a planting jar with some seeds for a keen gardener, the ingredients for a cake or biscuits for a keen cook, little promises on pieces of paper for ways to help or quotes from poems or inspiring words.

The illustrations are full of joy, capturing the full range of Benji’s emotions before, during and after his visit to the Christmas Department Store. All the wonder and magic is beautifully shown, but so is the simplicity and love of Benji’s home. I love their Christmas tree which the family have drawn on pieces of paper and pinned up in a corner of the room- another excellent idea for some family fun!

Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for those who have lost someone and although it is never mentioned, the loss of Benji’s mother is implied by her absence and a family photo on the sideboard which shows her in a family group. This detail would also allow readers to empathise with the family and discuss personal loss (for whatever reason) should it be appropriate to their situation.

A wonderfully heartwarming story which leaves you glowing with love and hope!

Kid Christmas of the Claus Brothers Toy Shop

Nicky Claus lives with his three uncles, Louis, Hanz and Levi and has grown up helping with the family business- the Claus Brothers’ Toy Shop. In a mysterious room behind the shop, the three uncles work together to create the most wonderful, magical toys which every child wants. However, Nicky notices that there are children gazing in the shop windows who never come inside and one Christmas Eve, he decides to follow them. Eventually he comes to a big room, full of children, where Nicky meets a little girl called Lottie and learns why the children never enter the shop or have toys. Nicky vows that every single child in the city will be given a toy so they can feel happy.

With the help of his uncles, Nicky’s grand plan gets underway…

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this story! Offering a new version of how Father Christmas came to be, it embodies what the true spirit of the festive season should be, showing the importance of kindness, generosity of spirit, friendship and love. Children will delight in spotting the links between this story what they know of Father Christmas’s traditional customs as Nicky’s dream of sharing the toys with everyone comes true. The teacher in me can see all manner of possibilities for using the story as a key text to support work in English as it offers so many possibilities for inspiring writing as well as being perfect for developing empathy and understanding. The story also lends itself to sparking so much art work… I feel the need to start planning, but above all, this is a glorious story to snuggle down with and share!

The illustrations are everything we have come to expect from David Litchfield. Glowing with warmth, there are so many details to notice and enjoy. The toy shop images have Dickensian Christmas feel to them, overflowing with traditional games and toys, the faces beaming with joy a clear contrast to those wistfully gazing at all the treasure out of their reach. I am no artist and so am constantly in awe of how David Litchfield uses light in his pictures- he manages to capture ‘snow light’, firefly light, moonlight…so many types of light giving different spreads different feelings.

The ending is just perfect with the illustrations once again adding to the tale. This is my new favourite Christmas story which I will be sharing at every opportunity!
