There are so many incredible books available at the moment that it is impossible to read them all, no matter how hard I try! Here are my thoughts about some of the books I have read and how I think they could be used in school as well as Q and A sessions with authors and illustrators.
A Sprinkling of Danger
‘A Sprinkling of Danger’ finds Alice Éclair on another spying adventure. When an American film crew arrives at the beautiful palace of Versailles, there is great excitement, but suspicions that a spy is amongst them means Alice is once more on the case. Using her baking skills, Alice manages to gain a place on set along with her fellow spy, Pierre. However, Pierre seems to have his own agenda, leaving Alice to face danger on her own. This could be her stickiest mission yet…

Every bit as delicious as the two previous mysteries, ‘A Sprinkling of Danger’ is a brilliant read. Alice remains as resourceful and determined, combining excellent observation skills, a passion for pastries and a nose for adventure as she solves the mission she has been set. In this story, she not only has to contend with solving the case, but is also challenged by the sneering, unhelpful actions of Pierre who is supposed to be working on her side, but is as obnoxious as can be.
Versailles (one of my favourite places in the world!) makes a magical backdrop for the tale and the author has done a wonderful job of capturing the beauty and wonder of this stunning location, dropping little nuggets of historical information in every now and then. Against this setting, Alice whips up her fantastic culinary treats, making the reader’s mouth water as they try to crack the case. There are plenty of red herrings to distract and misdirect, but in the end, Alice triumphs, not only exposing the enemy spy, but resolving her questions about Pierre.
Perfect for reading as part of the series or as a stand-alone adventure, the story ends with hints about a next mission and I, for one, can’t wait to read it!

Bridget Vanderpuff and the Baked Escape
Bridget Baxter lives at the Orphanage for Errant Childs, an institution run by the evil Miss Acrid, who does everything she can to make Bridget’s life a misery. Although Bridget is more than a match for her, she is delighted when the village baker, Mr Vanderpuff arrives at the orphanage, looking for a child to care for. Although she is talented at many things, Bridget discovers that she is a terrible baker; however, perhaps her unique baking style is just what’s needed to save the day!
I was lucky enough to hear Martin Stewart talk about ‘Bridget Vanderpuff’ at the Federation of Children’s Book Groups’ Conference last month. His lovely sense of humour and obvious love of cake made for a very enjoyable session and ‘Bridget Vanderpuff and the Baked Escape’ quickly made its way to the top of my TBR pile!
Unique and quirky, Bridget is a heroine like no other! From her thick orange hair full of useful tools to her paraskirt, she is bright and brave, smart and sassy. As she outwits the ghastly Miss Acrid, whose deep hatred of irregular plurals is responsible for the unusual name of the Orphanage, with her crazy inventions, the reader cannot help but cheer her on! Miss Acrid is the most detestable villain with no redeeming features who locks her charges in the dungeons, puts their legs in bear traps and generally seeks to make their lives as miserable as possible, but is no match for the wonderful Bridget!
A series of foot notes, which ‘clarify’ and expand upon elements of the text, add much to the humour of the tale which bounces along at a pleasing pace. Although I have only read a proof copy, a selection of David Habben’s wonderful line drawings are included, giving life to Bridget, her friends and foe!
A splash of silliness mixed with a heap of fun, ‘Bridget Vanderpuff and the Baked Escape’ is a brilliant read and I look forward to her next adventure, ‘Bridget Vanderpuff and the Ghost Train’!

The BIG Christmas Bake
In this delightful book, the traditional song ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ is given a tasty twist as once Christmas Day is over, the children bake up a delicious treat. One the first day of Christmas, a partridge brings dried fruit, followed by two speckled doves with flour on the second. As each day passes, more and more creatures arrive bearing ingredients for the Twelfth Night Cake until the dried bean is added on day ten- whoever finds this will be crowned the Twelfth Night King. Additional information and a recipe are included at the end of the story, along with the words from the original song.
Told in deliciously bouncy rhyme, this is a perfect story for reading aloud. The illustrations are full of humour and wonderful detail, offering new details to notice with each reading. The ingredient bearing animals are bursting with quirky personality- I love the dancing hippos and the leaping frogs!
There is so much to love about this book- plenty to discuss and laugh about as well as the fun of making Christmas cupcakes should you wish! Baking and books- the perfect combination.
