Brilliant Bookshops: Book-ish, Crickhowell

Crickhowell is a pretty little town which I have always admired whilst driving through on my way to Hay-on-Wye. However, I decided to put this to rights and spent a lovely afternoon there, discovering its delights!

Apparently, Crickhowell is named after Crug Hywel or Howell’s Rock, the Iron Age Fort above the town. Overlooking the River Usk, Crickhowell Castle, a symbol of Norman power, is now stands in ruins and the church, dedicated to St Edmund, king and martyr, is well worth a visit.

Amongst the wealth of independent shops in the town is Book-ish, a gem of a bookshop which it was a real pleasure to spend time in. It has to be one of the most friendly, welcoming shops I have ever entered!

Spacious and uncluttered, there is plenty of room to browse and enjoy the wonderful range of books on offer. Every nook has been used to great effect, cleverly showcasing the books to their best advantage and making me wish that I lived in the town so I could pop in every day!

A superb cafe can be found at the back of the shop which boasts local produce and the same friendly service. It was very busy, its popularity evident from the number of people enjoying their food.

Although I will continue to drive through Crickhowell on my way to the Hay festival, I will be making sure I leave plenty of time to stop and enjoy some time in Book-ish!
