I Flew Around the World

At just 19, Zara Rutherford set off to fly solo around the world, becoming the youngest female pilot to do so. ‘I Flew Around the World’ is her account of this incredible journey, the places she visited, things she saw and people she met.

The book is a fascinating read, starting with the meticulous planning which led to turning her dream into reality. Extremely engaging, the content is presented in a variety of ways, including diary entries, sections of information, fact boxes and labelled diagrams. Colourful illustrations make the book attractive, but there are also photos of Zara, her cats and her experiences which engage the reader directly with her travels.

Children can follow the route of her inspirational journey on the map provided and learn how her plane works before sharing her adventures, gaining a personal view of the places she visited, as she faced the challenges posed by typhoons, earthquakes, wildfires on her way. Amongst these experiences, she shares some of the ‘speciality’ dishes she tried- like moose spaghetti- and her delight at meeting up with her parents in Mexico.

The book would make an excellent addition to school libraries, but would also make an excellent guided reading text, offering plenty to discuss and many cross-curricular links as well as being extremely inspirational, showing that determination and courage can help you achieve your dreams. Zara is also a shining role model for any young girls, particularly those keen to pursue STEM subjects- she is now studying electrical engineering at university. However, I challenge anyone not to be inspired by her story!

NNFN2024: An Anthology of Exquisite Birds

Once again, I must apologise for the lack of photos. Despite having contacted Squarespace and followed their ‘advice’, the site is still not working correctly.

For day 20 of National Non-Fiction November, I am sharing ‘An Anthology of Exquisite Birds’, a very beautiful book which I wish I could hare pictures of- however, enough of my frustration!

Ben Hoare’s passion for birds and desire to inspire and enthuse others is absolutely infectious and, although I am not a fan of the term ‘gift book’, this one would make a very special present for any bird lover.

The contents introduces the reader to the wealth of birds captured in its pages. Sections indicated in italics focus on more generic topics like ‘beaks’ or ‘eggs’ which offer comparisons and comments about specific breeds of bird. Everything is beautifully presented: inside, a mixture of photographs and illustrations on each spread, outside, gold page edges and an embossed cover.

Readers learn how many of these birds got their names as well as some of the myths and legends associated with them. There is such a wealth of knowledge here- you might start by looking up a specific bird, but the easy style of the text and the author’s great knowledge and enthusiasm will lead you to others. A real gem, this is an absolute keeper!

NNFN2024: From Plant to Plate

Offering a mixture of recipes and information, ‘From Plant to Plate’ is perfect for inspiring a new hobby this NNFN2024! Bright colourful pages offer an appealing mixture of photographs and illustrations, adding visual appeal to interesting content.

Through its three sections, a cast of cheeky cartoon characters, the ‘Bug Squad’, act as guides, helping readers to engage with the text and adding plenty of additional advice and facts along the way. ‘Power Up’, the first section, is packed with information clearly explained information about digestion with labelled diagrams to support understanding. Guidance about nutritional values of different foods and eating to support the body’s needs is then given, supporting readers in making considered choices.

The next section, ‘Plant’, features information about planting, covering everything from composting to biodiversity and including specific guidance on growing certain plants like cherry tomatoes and butternut squash, linking these ingredients to recipes which are included in the final portion of the book. Lots of tips are offered throughout and each planting recommendation is accompanied by clear, step-by-step, illustrated instructions, making it easy for anyone to get started.

‘Plate’ is the final section which provides a selection of tasty and tempting treats, including the ingredients grown and harvested using advice previously given. The authors make suggestions for ingredient swaps which readers might like to try, giving their reasons, all of which encourages young cooks to consider the ingredients which they are using and make informed choices. Each recipe is given a difficulty rating and many offer ideas for using alternative ingredients.

Perfect for inspiring an interest in growing and cooking, environmental and personal health, ‘From Plant to Plate’ is an excellent book whether for inclusion in a library or for families to share and enjoy together.

NNFN2024: The Children’s Book of Wildlife Watching

Day 4 of National Non-Fiction November 2024! ‘The Children’s Book of Wildlife Watching’ is a companion to ‘The Children’s Book of Birdwatching’ and both are perfect for encouraging new interests in young children. ‘Wildlife Watching’ introduces readers to the wonderful world of wildlife which surrounds us and shows how much can be learned from observing nature around us.

A mixture of beautiful photographs and illustrations support the text, making each page full of appeal and interest to little explorers. Information is presented in clear, well-explained sections, signposted by headings and side-headings to guide the reader and there is a glossary at the end of the book. There are sections on minibeasts, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals, allowing families to focus on different species to investigate, perhaps led by the area they live in or a place they are visiting. There is much here that would also be useful to teachers setting up investigation spaces or themed activities for their classes.

Each section offers a practical activity which is both clearly explained and easy to undertake. These projects are supported by profiles of a range of creatures, each accompanied by a clear photograph to aid identification. A profile of the author is also presented at the end of the book, a lovely touch, allowing readers to see the ‘real’ person behind the work and also to convey a real enthusiasm for her subject!

A brilliant addition to home or school libraries, ‘The Children’s Book of Wildlife Watching’ offers an excellent starting point for inspiring a new hobby and building a life-long love of the world around us.

Life in the Wild

‘Life in the Wild’ is a fascinating book. In her note, the author describes it as ‘an intersection between science, story telling, adventure and conservation’ and it does indeed reflect all of these areas, making it a very accessible and enjoyable read.

Each chapter is devoted to an exceptional individual of different species, tagged and tracked by scientists to deepen understanding of their behaviour. Ten creatures are introduced followed by a map showing where they live and, in most cases, a tracked journey which they made. General information about the species is included and, for some, further information about conservation work is also given.

There are many books about animals available, but what makes this really stand out from others is the personal connection it offers. By sharing the real plight of 20741, a female adult polar bear, the reader feels a deeper empathy as the story of one illuminates the struggles of the many. The unique behaviours of each creature is sure to intrigue children and develop their interest in the incredible wildlife of our planet.

A wide range of animals is covered here, including some which perhaps get less exposure. Through the story of Sitka, readers learn of the rapid population decline of albatrosses whilst Bigonia’s tale offers a fascinating look at these intelligent, solitary creatures. Advances in technology have allowed scientists to learn more – and yet expose just how much still is unknown.

Each spread is beautifully presented using a mixture of photographs and illustrations, making the book as attractive as it is informative. A glossary and index are included and study references are also offered, allowing those who wish the opportunity to explore further.

Rebel Folklore

Folklore or the stories ‘of the folk’ are central to all societies. Re-told and embellished with every telling, these tales are passed from generation to generation and are usually bursting with larger than life characters. In this fascinating collection, readers are introduced to 50 stories of ‘spirits, witches and other misfits’ and in the introduction, the author acknowledges the importance of reading the tales with ‘their original contexts in mind’, both to fully understand them and also to respect the cultures they emerged from.

The stories are gathered by continent, with the country of origin also indicated. A dramatic illustration accompanies the information about each character and with my copy, I received some lovely cards featuring these. Each section is really well written, offering plenty of information, making links between figures from one culture or time and another and encouraging readers to reflect on the role of these characters who are considered outsiders or misfits in some way.

A completely absorbing, engrossing collection for anyone with an interest in folklore -or for anyone who is intrigued by something a little different, this is perfect for a slightly older audience. It is a book which I will return to again and again!

The Magic of Forests

Join Mimi cat as she leads the reader into the fascinating world of forests, learning about their secrets and their treasure. Starting by defining what a forest is and looking at the differences between woodlands, forests and jungles, the author then introduces the reader to the different types of forests which can be found. There is much to discover on each page!

The beauty and magic of trees, the abundance of nature which they sustain and the wonderful benefits they offer people are all celebrated in this lovely book. There is plenty of scientific information for those with a passion for finding answers- the detailed index and glossary making location information very easy- but the book also explores some of the fabulous folklore and fairy tales told about these magical places.

Each spread is beautifully illustrated with the information presented in accessible sections with clear side headings to tempt and guide. Quizzes and ideas for activities add yet more to what is a really lovely, fascinating book.

This lovely book sits alongside the ‘Greek Myths’ and ‘Norse Myths’, both from DK, which share the same format- and I hope there are plans to work through mythologies from across the world in this way! Beautifully presented, it is packed with information and illustrations which bring the stories of the Gods, Goddesses and Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt to life.

Starting with creation stories, the reader discovers how the ancient Egyptians believed the world was created, including pages of information focusing on Nut and Geb. Myths introducing different gods and goddesses follow, each absorbing and skilfully told. The stories are interspersed with information about Ancient Egyptian life and specific deities.

It’s a fascinating read and perfect for supporting children’s understanding about this fascinating period of history. Whilst the illustrations capture interest, the very readable text brings these stories to life in an accessible, magical way. A pronunciation guide and a glossary support the readers’ understanding and the detailed index makes information easy to locate.

The Extraordinary World of Birds

David Lindo, also known as The Urban Birder, shares his fascination for birds in this absorbing book about our feathered friends. ‘The Extraordinary World of Birds’ is divided into five sections: What is a bird?; Bird Families; Bird Behaviour; Bird Habitats and Birds and Me. The detailed index is perfect for enabling readers to locate specific information and the glossary explains some of the technical vocabulary used.

The ‘What is a bird?’ section not only explains what birds are, but also offers information about how they fly, the nests they build, their eggs and diet. It also contains a fascinating spread on some record breaking birds, like the peregrine falcon- not only the fastest bird, but the fastest animal in the world.

The next section explains how all of the world’s species of birds can be grouped into different families based on characteristics they share. Packed full of amazing information, there is so much to learn here- and so much to look out for when appreciating the birds around us. The book is illustrated with a mixture of photographs and drawings, making each spread very appealing.

As well as being perfect for children to enjoy at home, there is much here which supports learning in science and geography. Different biomes and habitats are explored as well as adaptations birds have made to survive. The impact of climate change is also considered.

The final section, ‘Birds and Me’, looks at our relationship with these fascinating creatures and what we can do to help them thrive. A spread on birding offers helpful tips to those who might be inspired to give it a go! The book also looks at national birds which countries have adopted, some unofficially.

Sure to inspire an interest in these incredible creatures, ‘The Extraordinary World of Birds’ is a fascinating and informative read.

The Magic of Seasons: A Fascinating Guide to Seasons Around the World

‘The Magic of Seasons’ is a wonderful book, perfect for curious children and adults alike, who would like to know more about the seasons. Starting by answering the question ‘what is a season?’, Vicky Woodgate, with the help of her cat, Mimi, then offers the reader a very practical and informative guide to this fascinating topic.

Offering many links to the curriculum, particularly geography and science, this book would be a valuable addition to class and school libraries. Each spread is well written and explanations are made in clear, concise chunks, often accompanied by illustrations which support the text. Fascinating - and occasionally, quirky- facts are scattered throughout, adding to the appeal. There are also quizzes for the reader to test their growing knowledge with along the way.

I particularly enjoyed the ‘History, Myths and Customs’ section, which introduces the reader to beliefs and traditions from across the world. Here the reader can find out about Zhulong the Candle Dragon, the Bulgarian festival of Baba Marta, the Gregorian calendar… a wealth of information which could lead to further investigation and discovery!

Sections of the book could be used for Guided Reading sessions, perhaps as pre-learning or to enhance lessons in other curricular areas. The comprehensive glossary, index and contents pages also offer opportunities for teaching and practising research skills.

‘The Magic of Seasons’ is an excellent introduction to the wealth of fascinating facts and folklore about these natural wonders!
