Brilliant Bookshops: Bookhaus, Bristol

Bristol Harbourside is a lively area, full of things to see and places to enjoy. Princes Wharf is home to the M-Shed, a museum devoted to Bristol and its history, and the Matthew, a modern reconstruction of the original ship that John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland in 1497. You can take a ride on the Bristol Harbour Railway, running on the quayside between M Shed and the SS Great Britain or alongside the New Cut to Vauxhall footbridge or a boat trip up and down the river.

Round the corner from the waterfront in Wapping Wharf is Rope Walk where Bookhaus can be found. A bright, welcoming space, it is also one of the best smelling bookshops I have ever visited! The selection of books on offer is wonderful, including some quite niche topics, making it a wonderful place to browse and find something new or different. Alongside a strong focus on modern fiction, they offer political works on anti-imperialism, feminism, socialism, environmentalism and abolition.

The children’s section is excellent, offering a wide range of titles for all ages. The impressive size of the area devoted to these books is a strong indication of the importance the shop- and its staff- place on ensuring their younger readers have a carefully curated and inspiring range of books to choose from, including debut and lesser known authors and publishers.

Bookhaus also hosts an impressive range of ‘in-haus’ events, spreading the enjoyment of reading and engaging with books to the whole community. A must visit bookshop!
